The Norwegian Nobel Committee in Oslo on Friday (October 11, 2019) announced that Ethiopian Prime Minister Abi Ahmed has been awarded this year's Nobel Peace Prize.
The Committee added that Abiy Ahmed had won the award in recognition of his efforts to achieve peace and international cooperation, particularly his initiative to resolve the border dispute with neighboring Eritrea.
Ethiopia and Eritrea restored relations in July 2018 after years of hostility and after a border war that lasted from 1998 to 2000.
German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas congratulated Abiy Ahmed on Friday: "His courage and foresight is an example and an example that transcends Africa." In a very short period of time, Ahmed paved the way for developments that no one considered possible, Mas said, adding: "Ethiopia and its neighbors can certainly continue on their path with the support of Germany."
The prize is worth 9 million Swedish kroner (about $900,000) and will be presented in Oslo on December 10th.
